A tribute to ‘La Prima donna al Giro d’Italia. On 16 August 2012, Ilona Kamps wiped the dust off the forgotten gravestone of Alfonsina Strada Morini she said aloud ‘you deserve to be better known, Alfonsina!’ What followed was a three-year journey of discovery through places that had figured in Alfonsina’s life. Ilona captured the subtle evidence of La Strada’s existence, it always seems as though Alfonsina is still alive…
Do you have to be a cycling fanatic to be fascinated by the life story of Alfonsina Strada, the only woman to have ridden the Giro d’ Italia in 1924? Not at all. Do you have to be Ilona Kamps, to capture the independent, resolute spirit of this cycling star – born on 16 March 1891? I think you do. Ilona has a perceptive eye, and pursues her goal unwaveringly. She achieves a balance between organising, searching, seeing, and accepting serendipity. These qualities coalesce in the details captured by this seasoned photographer. Added to all this is her personal experience of cycling, acquired largely, like Alfonsina’s, by battling it out with men at elite level. Ilona recognises the freedom and autonomy that Alfonsina felt as soon as her feet touched the pedals of her bicycle. That feeling enables her to capture moments in cycling that demand to be viewed again and again.
This story is more than a cycling-story and deserves a place in history. Her photo-albums with tangible memories of her life were lost after her death. Therefore this new photo-book, “Alfonsina. Il ciclismo è la mia vita”. Not only to ensure this exceptional history, but also to show the strength of intrinsic motivation.
Een hommage aan ‘La Prima donna al Giro d’Italia. Op 16 augustus 2012 veegt Ilona Kamps het stof van de vergeten grafsteen van Alfonsina Morini in Strada en zegt hardop: jij, Alfonsina, verdient een groter publiek! Wat volgt, is een drie jaar durende zoektocht langs plaatsen uit het leven van Alfonsina. Met haar camera legt Ilona de subtiele bewijzen vast van la Strada’s bestaan. Waar ze ook komt, steeds lijkt het of Alfonsina nog leeft en is meegereisd.
Moet je een wielerfanaat zijn om je te laten meeslepen door het levensverhaal van Alfonsina Strada, de enige vrouw die ooit (1924) de Giro d’ Italia reed? Nee hoor, zeker niet. Moet je de fotograaf Ilona Kamps zijn om de trotse vastberadenheid van deze wielrenster – geboren op 16 maart 1891 als dochter van een analfabete dagloner – in meer dan 500 beelden vast te leggen? Ja, dat lijkt me wel. Ilona is geduldig, kijkt scherp en volhardt in haar doel. Ze balanceert tussen organiseren, zoeken, zien en laten gebeuren. Die kwaliteiten komen samen in de details die ze als fotograaf vastlegt. Daarbij komt ook nog eens haar persoonlijke wielerervaring, die ze net als Alfonsina grotendeels heeft opgedaan door op hoog niveau te buffelen tussen de mannen. Ilona herkent de vrijheid en autonomie die Alfonsina voelde zodra haar voeten de pedalen raakten. Vanuit datzelfde gevoel legt ze wielermomenten bloot waarnaar je wilt blijven kijken.
Dit verhaal gaat over veel meer dan wielrennen alleen. Het verdient een plek in de (wieler)historie. Alfonsina’s fotoboeken met de tastbare herinneringen aan haar leven zijn na haar dood verloren gegaan. Daarom dit nieuwe fotoboek! Enerzijds om deze uitzonderlijke geschiedenis te waarborgen, anderzijds laat het de kracht zien van intrinsieke motivatie.
