Alfonsina Morini Strada

Alfonsina born on 16 March 1891 as the daughter of an illiterate day-labourer, At the age of ten Alfonsina took her fathers bike  This “fantastic machine” gave her the sense of speed and freedom. She listen to an inner voice that cared nothing about gender or social origin. Alfonsina recognised her talent as a cyclist and channelled all her natural drive into realising herself to the full through that talent.  She had the innate grit and determination to keep going in the face of obstacles and opposition. She was fuelled by the proud faith that she could achieve the goal she had set herself.

The time’ was complex in many other ways. The First World War took its pointless toll, dragging all and sundry into the depths of poverty by its end. Mussolini made his entry into Rome, and Fascism brought more fears with it. Alfonsina kept cycling. In short, she showed how obstacles, grief, norms imposed by others and all the prejudices to which gender or social origin give rise can be vanquished through self-knowledge, and by pursuing the passionate dream of following one’s own path in life.
